Those Naughty Lumps - 1978-1980

The band formed during the summer 1977, and the original line-up included Tony ‘Max Factor’ Mitchell (aka Mitchel, first on drums, then on guitar), P.M. Hart (aka Pete Hart, on vocals), Pete 'Kid' Younger (on bass, later of Wah! Heat) and Kevin Wilkinson (on drums, previously with Romantix and Stadium Dogs). But the band’s line-up fluctuated consistently during the next couple of years, featuring also Martin 'Armadillo' Cooper (on bass, later Moderates), Gordon 'Bream' Anderson (on guitar), and Bobbie Carr (on guitar, later Tontrix, Moderates and Surreal Estates) in one of the most ‘recognizable’ formation (and for a couple of gigs even Julian Cope joined on bass and Bill Drummond on guitar). TNL had a residency at the Havana Club where they were noticed by the Chameleons (Drummond and Balfe) for whose label, Zoo Records, the band recorded some tracks in June 1978. In December 1978 TNL recorded a couple of songs that were to be released as a single in January 1979:

Iggy Pop's Jacket (1979)

- Iggy Pop's Jacket (Those Naughty Lumps)
- Pure and Innocent (Those Naughty Lumps)
.
.
The single was produced by Noddy Knowler and The Chameleons, who also were responsible for designing the 7”’s cover. Gerry Gulligan (at the time with Fun) played sax during the sessions, and Drummon and Balfe also helped respectively on guitar and bass. The single a-side was later released also on the compilation album To The Shores of Lake Placid (1979).
1979 saw several line up changes and finally the band was reduced to only Wilkinson and Hart before they eventually folded in. In 1980 the EP Down At The Zoo was released, featuring songs composed by members of the various line-ups and recorded during the sessions of June 1978 (the players for those sessions were P.M. Hart on vocals, Bream on guitar, Wilkinson on drums, Cooper on bass and Carr on guitar, with the assistance, among others, of Steve Nelson, Frances Crook, Roy White).

(Kevin Wilkinson, the drum player with the Lumps, is not the same as the one in China Crisis, who passed away in 1999, whereas our man in the Lumps is alive and kicking. Check his page at

I would like to say that the Kevin Wilkinson in China Crisis is NOT the same as the one in Those Naughty Lumps. This has been re-hashed over the years for some reason and IS NOT FACTUAL.
