Based in Woodchurch, on the Wirral, Chinese Religion was formed in 1979 by Paul Cavanagh (guitar, later Balcony, Room, Holy Joes), Derek Jones (bass, later of Fabulous Salamander), Justin Stavely (drums, later Wild Swans), James Wetson (keyboards, later Cooling Towers), and David Lee Stark (vocals, later Dust Choir). They contributed songs for the Street to Street Volume 2 Compilation (namely, Eden and Chambers) and the compilation tape Episode 3. In 1981 the band released their first and only single (1981).
